Wines of Chile, ProChile, Fundación Imagen de Chile and the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington celebrated the announcement of the 14th Annual Wines of Chile Awards (AWOCA) with a matching contest this week at the headquarters of RAMW.
The official prize-giving program was held earlier in the day at the residence of the Ambassador of Chile in the United States, where the participating vineyards were honored in front of their peers, authorities and important media.
The winning wines were selected in September by 27 judges, including wine writers, sommeliers and professionals during a two-day blind tasting of more than 300 wines. The esteemed group awarded 82 gold medals to outstanding wines, 13 Best in Category, including: Sparkling, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Carignan, Red Blends, Pinot Noir, Carmenère and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as two Best in Show.
During the festivities of the night, more than 300 trade assistants and the media tried all the pairings and cast their votes for their favorite social media using the hashtags # AWOCA17 and #ChileChefChallenge. Among the attendees were representatives of National Geographic, the World Bank, Telemundo, the world diplomatic community, as well as prominent members of the Chilean Delegation and the State Department.
Each winning Awoca wine served as an inspiration to each chef's plate, who uniquely complemented the profile of the wine, offering the public various tasting options throughout the event. The evening closed with Mario Pablo Silva, president of Wines of Chile, who revealed the 13 winning wines of the category, while Myriam Gomez, executive director of Fundación Imagen de Chile, announced two 'Chefs Best Pairing Awards', one awarded by a selection of judges and another granted by popular vote through social networks.
